Unlike the following year, 2004 experienced a wild winter with little rainfall, leading to an early bud-break. The nature of the 2004 harvest was punctuated by a heat wave in early September, resulting in our grapes achieving their optimal ripeness and maturity. The 2004 Califa vintage is the most massive Syrah yet from the Domaine. Under its inky, brooding and "plush as velvet" black fruit lurks a rigid core of earth, tar and tobacco. Beyond the blackberry syrup and the rich cocoa dusting lies the long-lasting minerality that is the trademark "Chamisal spice" for which Domaine Alfred is noted.
