Increased rainfall in the winter and spring of 2005, followed by warm, dry weather, gave us near-perfect conditions and a "bumper crop" vintage. Presented with high yields, we dropped even more fruit than usual to enhance both balance and intensity. This powerful Syrah is a study in contrasts, with a character that is brooding, yet bold, wild, yet subdued. Complex dark fruit flavors are framed by our cool-climate Chamisal Vineyard's legendry potpourri of spices, all held together by a core of slightly aggressive tannins that provide structure and balance. This wine will reward patient cellaring as it gains maturity and depth.

"Here's a dense, dramatic young Syrah.  It's potent in black currant, cherry, anise and dark chocolate flavors, with plenty of toasty new oak.  But more notable is the structure.  Fine, ripely sweet tannins, good acidity and moderate alcohol make it balanced and even ageworthy over the next 6 years."
